This article is another entry in the budget DIY series, looking at inspiring ideas to improve your home at minimal cost! We spend most of our time in the lounge, or sitting room but the living room in our own house when we moved in was drab and covered in marks and dents from old furniture and the previous homeowners.
Rather than simply repaint we decided to make this wall the feature of our living room, and create a media wall for a tv system.
We first sketched the idea, carefully planning the project from start to finish. This step can save many headaches later!
We visualized the cable routing and planning how to best use existing sockets, and marking out measurements for supporting battens, and even took into account measurements for our existing home made cat tree!
Rather than vertical timber strips We decided to use simple panels of plain OSB to save costs, and simplify the construction.
We fixed horizontal battens to the plasterboard to spread the weight load across the entire wall.
We then carefully cut OSB panels to size using a circular saw, and cut a hole for the tv mount and cables using a jigsaw.
The panels were then fixed onto the battens using regularly spaced screws.
To further define the space we painted the adjacent wall a soft green to match the sofa, and hung plants from the roof on string to create a cosy sitting space.
It doesn’t take much to create a striking and unique feature wall for your home, all it takes is the right knowledge and some forwards planning!
